Dhaka Metro Rail to Start Operations This Saturday
Dhaka Metro Rail to Start Operations This Saturday – 17th August 2024
The much-anticipated Dhaka Metro Rail is set to begin operations this Saturday, as per the latest directives received by the authorities. The Metro Rail system is currently undergoing final inspections and safety checks before commencing passenger services.
Operational Readiness and Safety Checks
The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), responsible for the construction and operation of the metro system, has stated that it may take up to seven days to fully initiate passenger services. However, operations might begin sooner, pending the completion of final safety procedures. M. A. N. Siddique, Managing Director of DMTCL, confirmed that all necessary security measures are being finalized to ensure a smooth start.
Government Directives and Preparations
In a meeting with top officials, the Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus instructed the Road Transport Ministry to expedite the process of launching the Metro Rail service. Following this directive, DMTCL has initiated comprehensive preparations. As part of these efforts, officials conducted a thorough inspection of the entire metro route on foot today, with further safety evaluations scheduled for tomorrow.
Pre-launch Test Runs
Before commencing passenger services, the metro trains will undergo several days of test runs without passengers, starting this Tuesday. These test runs are crucial to ensure the system’s operational integrity and the readiness of the security personnel, who are still not fully mobilized after the recent government transition.
Partial Service Resumption
Upon resumption, the Metro Rail will skip the Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations due to damage sustained during recent unrest. However, passengers will be able to board and alight at the remaining 14 stations between Uttara and Motijheel.
Background
The Metro Rail service was suspended on July 18 after the Mirpur-10 Police Box was set on fire during a protest. The following day, the Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations were vandalized, leading to further delays in service resumption. Despite these incidents, DMTCL assures that the Metro Rail’s infrastructure, including tracks, coaches, signaling, and power systems, remains fully operational.
This development marks a significant step forward in Dhaka’s urban transportation, promising to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a modern, efficient means of travel for the city’s residents.
